This course is available for on-campus & remote (online) learning. All students participate in interactive, real-time classes.
In this course students will develop and refine a proposal for their PhD thesis in the Applied Policy stream of the Economics PhD. Students will work on framing a sharp research question or questions, developing a tractable research framework to answer those questions, and identifying a practical time-line for thesis preparation
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Construct and frame a sharp and workable research question
- Demonstrated experience in critically assessing research proposals, including their own and those of fellow students.
- Identify the major elements of their proposed PhD work.
- Design, write and defend a well-structured thesis proposal.
Indicative Assessment
- Essay - Pass/Fail only; 10 000 word essay on research area (70) [LO 1,2,3,4]
- Presentation - Research Questions (15) [LO 1,2,3,4]
- Presentation - Thesis/Chapter (15) [LO 1,2,3,4]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. The standard workload for a 6 unit course is 130 hours including in class time and independent study.
