This research-led Honours course is designed to instil in students a capacity to critique the ways in which meaning is created and understood across national boundaries. It aims to question the very concept of ‘national’ cultural production by employing various intersectional, postcolonial and transcultural perspectives. The course will give students an opportunity to position their Honours project in relation to other discourses and discipline areas and to facilitate discussion of the similarities and differences visible across nations and cultures. In doing so, it has as a primary objective not only the further development of cross-cultural understanding, but also the active involvement of students in interdisciplinary and intermedial conversations that can shape their research and open it to new ideas and inputs that would otherwise be unavailable in their home disciplinary context.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- understand and engage with current scholarly discourse in the field of transnational cultural studies;
- apply a transnational lens to their Honours project;
- participate in conversations across national and disciplinary boundaries; and
- demonstrate high-level skills in cross-cultural communication.

Workload
260 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 24 hours of contact over 12 weeks (on a one-on-one basis or in small groups) and b) 236 hours of independent student research, reading and writing (approximately 15-20 hours per week).
