Qualitative Research Methods in Language Studies will give HDR students the opportunity to explore, experience and critique qualitative research methods used within applied linguistics, linguistics and language and culture research, such as case study, ethnography, participant observation, interviews, questionnaires and discourse analysis. The course will examine notions of validity and what counts as evidence in qualitative research approaches. Students will develop the ability to critique qualitative and mixed-method designs and consider how the designs fit within the broader range of research methods used in language-related research. Students will identify and examine selected methods and approaches relevant to their PhD projects, and discuss how selected methods might contribute to the development of new knowledge in the area. In addition, they will investigate and evaluate methods which will prepare them for a range of future research projects beyond the PhD, including in the context of relevant professional practice.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- identify and critically evaluate studies which use qualitative research techniques and methodologies
- explain and critique theories underpinning qualitative research
- apply qualitative research methods appropriately to original and worthwhile research questions.
- write and present a research proposal or literature review which demonstrates intellectual independence and deep understanding of qualitative methods
Assessment from this course can be reused in the PhD thesis.
- Empirical qualitative analysis assignment (2000 words) (25) [LO 2,3]
- In-depth critical evaluation of qualitative research literature, comparing and contrasting studies (2500 words) (25) [LO 1,2]
- Research proposal or literature review including oral presentation (3500 words) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. 130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks, and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
