Clinical Coursework III comprises a number of sub-courses covering more advanced and specialised topics in clinical theory and practice such as:

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Understand the psychological theories of the aetiology, progression, and/or recovery, precursors, and sequelae and the psychopathological characteristics and diagnostic taxonomies of the classification of eating, psychotic and bipolar disorders.
  2. Use evidence-based assessments to evaluate eating, psychotic and bioplar disorders, formulate treatment plans based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and employ CBT techniques and strategies to treat eating, psychotic and bipolar disorders.
  3. Demonstrate superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to form positive working alliances with unmotivated clients and with peers.
  4. Understand and use theoretical systems that explain the aetiology and remediation of psychological problems based on the principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), formulate treatment plans based on the principles of MI and IPT and employ MI and IPT techniques and strategies to treat psychological disorders.

Other Information

Enrolees must be eligible for registration as a psychologist in the ACT. This course is assessed on a Course Requirement Satisfied (CRS) or Fail basis. Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks in order to pass the course.

  1. The assessment for each sub-module equals 1/2 of the overall assessment for this course: (null) [LO null]
  2. Psychopathology and Intervention III: Skills demonstrations (20%); Eating disorders resource kit (25%); Psychosis and bipolar resource kit (25%); Final exam (30%) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  3. Specialised Interventions: MI role play (30%); Reflective writing (30%); Case report (40%) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]

Workload

This course is comprised of submodules. The face-to-face/contact hours for each submodule may vary, but are expected to consist of:

  • Psychopathology and Intervention III: 3 hours/week (36 hours over the semester)
  • Specialised Interventions: 2 hours/week (24 hours over the semester)

Plus a minimum 200 hours of self-study and several mandatory workshops.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Master of Clinical Psychology (7601) and have successfully completed PSYC8102. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed PSYC9013 or PSYC9413.

Prescribed Texts

To be confirmed at the beginning of the course. Texts will be selected in line with current research.

Assumed Knowledge

A basic understanding of clinical diagnosis, assessment and treatment comparable to undergraduate level abnormal psychology.
