This unit gives students exposure to project management in an operational context. Students undertake a semester long project planning assignment. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate their ability to plan the following aspects of project management: Project Scope Management, Project Time, Cost and Quality, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communications Management, Project Risk Management, and Project Procurement Management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Initiate, plan, monitor, control, and close a business project as part of a project team;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of prominent project management techniques (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2, and SCRUM);
  3. Apply activity planning and control techniques including breakdown structures, network diagrams, precedence diagramming, and the critical path method;
  4. Apply cost control and estimation techniques including budgeting, function point analysis, and earned value management;
  5. Apply scope control techniques including net present value, payback analysis, and weighted scoring methods;
  6. Understand the importance and nature of team roles, responsibilities, communication, and reporting within the project context;
  7. Demonstrate the role and importance of ethics, fairness, and integrity in the project team context.

Projects

Students will be engaged in projects designed with and for organisational partners.

Indicative Assessment

Workload

Students taking this course are expected to commit 130 hours to completing the work. For semester length offerings this will typically include 3 hours per week in class and at least 7 hours a week on average (excluding non-teaching weeks) on course reading, research, writing and assignment work.

To enrol in this course you must have completed INFS3024 or (INFS2024 and COMP2400).
