This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully undertake information systems analysis. Lectures and tutorials provide coverage of the concepts, skills, methodologies, techniques, tools and perspectives considered essential for systems analysts working with modern information systems and their development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain the organizational context in which information systems development is undertaken;
- Explain basic systems theory and the role of the systems analyst;
- Describe the systems analysis and development process;
- Elicit information system requirements;
- Construct process, logic, and data models using traditional modelling techniques;
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic object-oriented modelling using UML;
- Demonstrate an understanding of “soft systems” aspects and techniques in systems analysis;
- Apply principled investigation and ethical judgment in systems analysis, consistent with the ACS Code of Ethics.

Workload
Students taking this course are expected to commit 130 hours to completing the work. For semester length offerings this will typically include 3 hours per week in class and at least 7 hours a week on average (excluding non-teaching weeks) on course reading, research, writing and assignment work.
Where this course is offered in intensive delivery mode as a continuous block over a shorter period of time, the expected total time commitment for this course will be 130 hours.
