This course is available for on-campus & remote (online) learning. All students participate in interactive, real-time classes.
This course observes the four main philosophies behind research approaches to shed light on the purpose of social science research associated with these philosophies, to encourage PhD students to weigh the strengths and benefits of quantitative and qualitative research to apply to their projects. The course provides hands-on, practical learning to PhD students on the foundations of statistical analysis and application, as used in social science research and purpose. Students are encouraged to engage in active learning on analysing data from widely-used data websites to apply lessons regarding when, how, and what data to use.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Distinguish between the philosophies that guide the epistemology of knowledge.
- Situate and explain research in the broader literature, discipline, and research philosophy.
- Understand and apply quantitative statistical analysis and inference.
- Critically evaluate and explain data operationalisation, quality, fit, measurement, and reliability.
- Build critical foundations for additional in-depth qualitative or quantitative skill development.

- Synopses and application of shared readings (5 total, 5% each) (25) [LO 1,2,5]
- Short papers applying learning (5 total, 300-words per piece, 15% each) (75) [LO 2,3,4,5]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
Total contact time is 30 hours, conducted in person, 2.5 hours x 12 meetings. This is an intensive course.
Outside of contact hours: Preparation time of no less than 6 hours for every 2.5 hour session.
