What is 'real', anyway? This course explores theoretical frameworks and practical issues concerning realism, reality, post- truth, and the interplay between fiction and non-fiction through cinema, television, social media and streaming platforms. It examines approaches to different realist styles and codes in relation to media such as such as digital documentary, direct cinema, social media-mediated autobiography and reality formats from a variety of national and transnational contexts.

- evaluate and critically analyse theoretical frameworks and debates concerning the relationship between fiction and non-fiction, realism, and reality;
- apply screen studies methodologies in order to analyse different examples of visual and textual productions across national and transnational contexts; and
- communicate an understanding of research methods in written and oral forms.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time consisting of:a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 12 hours of progressive group project work and 24 hours of instructor-led seminars (all classes will include problem-based discussions and will be interactive); and
b) 94 hours of independent student research including scheduled screenings of films studied in the course.
