This course provides an opportunity for students to participate in new learning abroad opportunities offered by the Centre for Art History and Art Theory as part of the major/minor in Art History and Curatorial Studies. Opportunities include faculty-led study tours to Europe or Asia where students will spend up to 21 days overseas studying art and culture first hand, visiting historical sites and museums. Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the travel to a high risk destination form and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.
Information on each topic offered within this course will be outlined in the 'Other Information' section, including the topics offered, and information on the unit value, convener, academic session and indicative workload. The topics offered through this course will typically be made available through a competitive selection process.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- discuss key art historical themes related to the countr(ies) visited;
- argue how art objects relate to their historical and/or contemporary milieu;
- evaluate scholarship relating to works of art, institutions and cultural sites, using relevant art historical methodologies; and
- demonstrate independent academic research and formulate their own perspectives on key themes of art studied in-country.
Other Information
In 2024, ARTH2001 will be offered as "Indonesian Art: Classical to Contemporary". The course will offer students a grounded understanding of historical and contemporary art and culture in Indonesia visiting historical and archeological sites, museums and galleries, urban environments, artists' studios and experimental spaces. Travel dates will coincide with the mid-semester break in Semester 2 (first two weeks of September 2024), but may extend on either side by up to two days. Students will need to attend two introductory sessions on campus, and up to two follow-up sessions after returning from Indonesia. Costs associated with travel, accomodation, and sundry expenses for the course will be confirmed in advance of enrolment. Indicative costs based on prior travel suggest that this course may cost approximately $5000 including international airfares. Enrolment in this course will be subject to: 1) completing the requisite travel-approval form; 2) payment of deposit by the due date; 3) a permission code provided by the School of Art and Design.

Indicative workload:
260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 90 hours of contact delivered intensively as an in-country field trip of up to 21 days; and
b) 170 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
