In this course students will undertake advanced readings in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, in order to increase their critical understandings of identified works and how they are situated in the field, and develop knowledge of emerging research. Students will continue their training in theoretical and empirical approaches to Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and engage with discipline experts through guided readings and scholarly presentations. Material submitted in this course may be incorporated into a student’s thesis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. review and evaluate the approaches used by scholars in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics to address the development of thinking in the discipline;
  2. review and evaluate the types of evidence used in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics to support or refute hypotheses;
  3. demonstrate critical engagement with arguments in a range of sub-areas in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics; and
  4. demonstrate enhanced skills in synthesising and critiquing published works.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Written critical reflections on research papers and presentations (6 unit course total 3000 words; 12 unit course total 6000 words) (50) [LO 1,2]
  2. Written critical reflection on an area of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (6 unit course 2000 words; 12 unit course 4000 words) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4]

Workload

6-unit version of course: 130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 18 hours of attendance at weekly Seminars,

b) 112 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.


12-unit version of course: 260 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 24-36 hours of contact with instructor over 12 weeks

b) 224-236 hours of independent student research, reading and writing (approximately 15-20 hours per week).

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts Honours (HARTS or HART2), Bachelor of Languages Honours (HLANG), Bachelor of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies Honours (HMECA) or Bachelor of Asian Studies Honours (HASIA), or have completed 144 units towards the Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) (APHAR or APNAR).
