The course is designed for students in the Master of Science (Advanced) programs offered by the Research School of Physics and the research topic will be commensurate with the specific augmentation being studied. This course is designed to connect students, on an individual basis, to active researchers at the ANU. The student will be expected to participate in a substantial project at a postgraduate level. Students are advised to contact the Academic Contact for information on available projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Plan, manage and execute a substantial project;
  2. Engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic;
  3. Systematically identify relevant theoretical concepts and models, and relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence;
  4. Keep accurate and detailed records of work undertaken, including literature review, lab work or computational work;
  5. Work constructively with active researchers on real research problems;
  6. Critically evaluate their own work and results, as well as results reported in the literature;
  7. Communicate both in writing and orally the significance of the project in the context of the literature, the problem which the project solves, the research concepts, results and the implications of what has been learned in conducting the project.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Logbook or project portfolio providing continuous evidence of the student's research efforts and conceptual development (30) [LO 4,5,6]
  2. Formal written thesis report (50) [LO 1,2,3,4,5,6,7]
  3. Oral presentation (20) [LO 1,2,3,4,5,6,7]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours per 6 units of enrolment throughout the semester including:

  • Face-to face component which will consist of weekly meetings with the project supervisor.
  • Approximately 20 hours (12 unit course) to 40 hours (24 unit course) per week of total student learning time made up of independent student research, reading and writing. Students are expected to maintain regular contact with their supervisor and attend all supervisory meetings.
