This course is designed to develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the Russian language. Students are introduced to life and culture of the Russian-speaking societies and principles of intercultural communication. The course incorporates principles of communicative and task-based language teaching.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. decode the Cyrillic script accurately using the fundamentals of the Russian sound system;
  2. understand and reproduce aspects of Russian pronunciation, including vowels, consonants, and basic intonation;
  3. engage in very simple communication of predictable content in spoken and written Russian about topics covered in the course, such as personal details;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of aspects of life and culture of the Russian speaking societies, including basic principles of culturally appropriate Russian language use.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks, including recorded/online and tutorial activities,

b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
