This course offers students the opportunity to focus on a number of core anthropological research methods that characterise the way the the discipline collects information and uses it in the production of ethnography. The course also builds knowledge about the relationship of methods to the core aims, orientations and ethical obligations of the discipline. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical skills in anthropological methods and develop an understanding of the range of ethical issues and responsibilities involved in anthropological research.

The course aims to:

• present core ethnographic methods, introduce the basic tools and techniques

• introduce the basic tools and techniques of qualitative field research in anthropology

• introduce the basic elements of data analysis for qualitative materials, and

• provide research integrity and ethical training.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. develop a firm grounding in advanced anthropological method, particularly in the design and conduct of ethnographic research;
  2. critically analyse, reflect and closely examine their own ethnographic projects with respect to the central issues and debates in contemporary anthropology;
  3. develop the ability to critically engage in meaningful discussions about the strengths and problems of ethnographic representations; and
  4. further develop the ability to present their work from reading and research orally to peers in a seminar format.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Research methods paper, 4,000 words (40) [LO 1,2,3]
  2. Leading class discussion for one week with submission of a 1000 word summary of readings for that week. (10) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  3. Completion of Research Integrity Training Workshop and the Human Ethics (ARIES) Training (10) [LO 1,2]
  4. Draft methodology section of research ethics application, 1500 words (30) [LO 1,2,3]
  5. Participation at the weekly seminars (10) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

260 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 24 hours of contact over 12 weeks of seminars; and

b) 236 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
