This course is designed to prepare you for the HDR research program. Under the supervision of your Panel Chair you will learn critical skills in research design, proposal writing and preparation for research-intensive fieldwork.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Critically review relevant literature pertaining to their field of research;
  2. Develop aims, objectives and methodology suitable for completing a thesis in their field;
  3. Draft a written research proposal; and
  4. Successfully disseminate their proposed field of research to a multi-disciplinary audience in a concise and comprehensible manner.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Thesis proposal, including, as a minimum, an introduction, the aims and objectives of the project, a preliminary review of relevant literature, summary of the methods to be applied, intended outcomes and provisional time-line for the research project, 8000 words (60) [LO 1,2,3]
  2. Preliminary outline of at least two thesis chapters, 1500 words (10) [LO 2]
  3. Presentation of the research proposal, 30 minutes (30) [LO 4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

260 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 12 hours of contact over 12 weeks of regular meetings and discussions with a supervisor; and

b) 248 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
