In this course, students will engage in projects and special topics developed in consultation with the convenor. The course will enable students to develop applied cybernetic competencies expected of professionals working in business, government, academia, or the broader community. Students can propose industry engagement or research projects, but these will need to be established following negotiations between the ANU and the potential host organisations or project sponsors.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Identify and apply selected research literature to inform applied cybernetics analysis of an aspect of a real-world cybernetic system.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply cybernetic concepts and frameworks to analyse some aspect of a cybernetic system, accounting for the technical, social, economic, organisational, cultural components of said system.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to frame critical, constructive, and organisation-relevant questions, and appropriately apply existing and emerging methodologies to describe and explain challenges surrounding the design, construction, commission, management and/or decommissioning of cybernetic systems.
  4. Fluently apply a range of techniques, tools and resources to framing questions, analyse data, interpret results and formulate conclusions about cybernetic systems with the goal to further test the core concepts and methodologies of Applied Cybernetics and communicate these to others. 
  5. Demonstrate advanced cognitive, technical, management and communication skills to develop independent research and/or design in the field.
  6. Generate and communicate outcomes of cybernetic system research in relevant formats for diverse audiences.
  7. Synthesize a wide range of relevant published works and data with primary research data into course project delivery.
  8. Demonstrate ability to work productively with stakeholders and teams in partner organisations, to learn from other professionals and to contribute positively to the knowledge and practice of organizations involved in the project.

This course provides you with the opportunity to apply cybernetics to a range of professional contexts, drive your self-guided learning, and build cybernetic skills with confidence.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Combination of individual research and/or attendance at the internship placement, attendance at and participation in assessment activities, and writing the project report
