Traditional approaches to health focus on the individual and are limited in that they take little account of context; local, cultural, social, environmental or global. This course gives students a unique opportunity to examine the central individual and structural approaches to public health, and will equip them with the skills to make a reflexive examination of their own presuppositions about approaches to public health issues and the effective translation of health interventions. The course draws on a wide range of case examples from the literature to make explicit the ways in which there are hidden models directing health interventions, most of which ignore context.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Critically evaluate, from an anthropological perspective, individually focussed approaches in public health
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of major differences between individually focussed and structurally focussed health interventions
- Apply these concepts and principles in the analysis of particular public health issues in specific contexts
- Reflect on personal practice to integrate anthropological perspectives into current and future reasoning and decision-making.

Workload
The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester/session including:
- Face-to face component which may consist of one x one hour lecture, per week.
