This course provides advanced discussion of theoretical and empirical models of labour markets. The topics to be covered are: labour supply, including determinants of labour market participation and hours of works; labour demand; labour market equilibrium and wage determination; compensating wage differentials; investments in human capital and returns to education; earnings distribution; labour mobility; labour market discrimination; role of unions; incentive pay; and unemployment. In each topic, relevant theory and empirical research will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. describe the fundamental features of labour markets;
  2. apply relevant microeconomic and macroeconomic theory to analyse a wide range of labour market issues;
  3. critically evaluate assumptions and limitations of theoretical labour market models;
  4. critically evaluate empirical techniques used in the analysis of labour market data;
  5. effectively communicate the evaluation of research papers in writing and/or orally.

To enrol in this course you must have completed the equivalent of, or have concurrent enrolment in ECON8025. Incompatible with ECON4441.

Assumed Knowledge

Students are advised to have basic preparation in statistics and econometrics. In particular, students are suggested to have some skills in regression analysis at the level of the undergraduate statistics/econometrics class.
