This course builds on the knowledge of French language and culture acquired in FREN1004 or through equivalent pathways of study. The aim of the course is to expand students' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in French, as well as to reflect on different aspects of Francophone cultures and societies through the introductory study of a variety of written and audio-visual materials.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. competently engage with a range of linguistic forms of the language in both written and spoken contexts;
  2. understand a range of written and audiovisual texts, such as literary extracts, short films, and songs;
  3. recognise and use different language styles and registers;
  4. present discussions and arguments in spoken and written French; and
  5. understand aspects of Francophone cultures and societies.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Online activities, 2-3 hours/week (15) [LO 1,3,5]
  2. Two in-class tests, 50 mins each (25% each) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  3. Oral presentation, 5-7 mins (25) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  4. Participation (10) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks, including online/self-directed and tutorial activities

b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed FREN1004, or have equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test, or with permission of the convener. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed any of the following courses: FREN2025, FREN3006, FREN3007, FREN3009, FREN3010, FREN3011, FREN6503, FREN6504, FREN6505, FREN6506, FREN6509, FREN6010 or FREN6011.
