This course will examine key themes in German literary and cultural studies. Through the study of acclaimed novels and texts, which may include film and other media, students will gain a critical appreciation of significant currents in German culture and society, and their broader historical context. Students will develop specialist vocabulary and skills enabling them to discuss these texts using sophisticated oral and written German. 

Each iteration of this course will be based around particular modules or themes. These may include (but are not limited to) the following: 

  • Themes in Contemporary Literature
  • Dance and performance studies
  • Film and Media Studies
  • Germans and Indigenous Cultures
  • Gender in German Culture
  • Crossing borders: Cultures of migration and refuge 
  • Jewish German culture
  • Stories relating to a particular region or city in the German speaking world, e.g. Berlin, Austria, the former eastern territories

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate critical engagement with key themes, texts, and authors in German literary and cultural studies;
  2. critically analyse and undertake research on literary texts and authors using appropriate databases and discipline-specific methods;
  3. demonstrate an advanced level of spoken German, including skills in formal class presentations; and
  4. demonstrate an advanced level of written German, including in German academic writing and analysis.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Essay in German (2000 word) (30) [LO 1,2,4]
  2. Class paper or in-class test in German (1000 word) (25) [LO 1,2,4]
  3. A 15-minute recorded oral class presentation in German (25) [LO 1,2,3]
  4. Class participation, including online activities (10) [LO 1,3,4]
  5. Oral exam (10) [LO 1,2,3]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 24 hours of seminars

b) 12 hours of film screenings and/or peer-to-peer, online and tutorial activities

b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed GERM3007, or have an equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test, or with permission of the convener. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed GERM6051.

You will need to contact the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics to request a permission code to enrol in this course.

To enrol in this course you are assumed to have knowledge of German equivalent to completion of Advanced German 1 GERM3007, or have an equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test.
