This course develops knowledge and skills and tools relating to having strategic foresight in the context of Australia's contemporary outlook. It will also draw on complex systems thinking to examine risk and uncertainty taught in the first course, across different domains. Experts across the ANU will provide an overview of Australia's futures including: 1) Gender and social inequalities, 2) Public health 3) Economic outlook, 4) Environmental and climate changes 5) the Asia Pacific, and 6) Technology and artificial intelligence. This course serves as an important foundation for other courses in the MBA program; for example, the courses on dynamic capabilities and innovation in the public sector ecosystem, shared purpose and strategic leadership, and public sector resource management.
This is a foundational course in the M Business Administration in Government.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Describe basic concepts underlying the domain of forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook;
- Identify problems, challenges, needs, and opportunities for the use of forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook;
- Critique the tools and frameworks used in forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook;
- Evaluate ideas, relationships, resources and networks by engaging forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook;
- Integrate concepts and theories with real cases of forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook; and
- Reflect on the personal significance of forward thinking and Australia’s contemporary outlook in their future careers.

Workload
Where this course is offered in intensive delivery mode as a continuous block over a shorter period of time, the expected total time commitment for this course will be at least 65 hours for course reading, classes, research, writing and assessment work.
