  • STEM Course

In this course, the students focus on one aspect of the topic specialisations and gain specialist knowledge and skills under the supervision of a research or industry expert. For example, students may learn how to analyse, design, simulate, operate and/ or characterise a chosen theory, problem or solution.  Alternatively, students may investigate economic, security and/or public policy implications of a chosen question or solution.  This problem may be either theoretical or experimental.  The course will typically involve a series of readings, technical instruction and problem solving tasks specified by a supervisor. Student learning will be assessed via a major report, learning logbook and performance, and a presentation. Students are to identify and engage a supervisor to tailor a learning plan to their interests and future research or industry aspirations. Students may complete this course multiple times as long as each instance is on a different aspect of the topic specialisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Investigate the key principles, concepts and applications of specific physics topics
  2. Analyse, design, create, operate, simulate and/ or characterise specific physics concepts, or explain the economic, security and/ or public policy implications of specific questions and solutions; 
  3. Develop advanced written and verbal communication communication skills.

This course caters to a number of masters programs offered by the Research School of Physics, and due to supervisor requirements students will need to seek permission in order to enrol. Students should take care when enrolling to select the topic associated with the relevant program of study. Contact pec.physics@anu.edu.au for details.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours per 6 units throughout the semester including:

  • Face-to face component which may consist of at least one one-hour supervisor consultation per week
  • Approximately 118 hours of self directed study which will include up to 9 hours of reading/ technical work per week and preparation for other assessment tasks. 


The default scheduling for special topics is in person, however some special topics in this course might be available fully online or as an intensive course. Please contact the relevant convener for more information. An online class will be scheduled if deemed appropriate.
