The Mathematics Honours specialisation is intended for students who have a foundational knowledge of the field and are interested in undertaking an independent research project under the direction of a supervisor. The Honours specialisation is usually taken full time for two consecutive semesters and includes research training, in-depth analysis of contemporary topics, and a substantial research project culminating in the production of a thesis.  The Honours specialisation is a solid foundation in the basics of research and can provide either a pathway to a PhD or entry to careers in finance, education, public service, or technology.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation of a chosen research topic to generate new knowledge in an area of mathematics.
  2. Systematically evaluate relevant theory and concepts in mathematics, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Demonstrate capacity for mathematical reasoning through analysing, proving, and explaining concepts from the chosen research area.
  4. Communicate and explain complex concepts clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.

Other Information

Students can apply to enrol in 6000 or 8000 coded mathematics courses with the approval of the convener

MATH4201 and MATH4349 may be repeated for credit with a transcript notation to indicate the topic.

As per the admission requirements, all students seeking admission into this Honours specialisation must provide evidence of the approval of an identified supervisor for the research project. This can be achieved by uploading the completed supplementary form  to the application portal.

Admission Requirements

1.    Satisfaction of the admission requirements described in the relevant honours plan
2.    Eight 2000 and 3000- level courses in the subject area mathematics with at least four 3000-level courses or equivalent with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL) of courses in the discipline Mathematics, excluding 1000-level courses (i.e. introductory undergraduate courses), with the highest marks.
3.    written consent of an identified supervisor for the research project

Cognate Disciplines

Mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science

Requirements

This Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

24 units from the completion of the following course:

MATH4005 - Thesis and Presentations in Mathematics (24 units) (Must be taken more than once over two consecutive semesters)

24 units from completion of courses from the following list:

MATH4201 - Topics in Computational Maths Honours (6 units)

MATH4202 - Theory of Partial Differential Equations Honours (6 units)

MATH4204 - Algebraic Topology Honours (6 units)

MATH4343 - Foundations of Mathematics (6 units)

MATH4349 - Special Topics in Mathematics (6 units)

HONS4602 Final Honours Grade will be used to calculate the class of Honours and the mark. It will be calculated using the formula: S (mark x units) / S units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero

Note:

MATH4201 Topics in Computational Maths Honours may be undertaken more than once in a different topic in each instance.

MATH4349 Special Topics in Mathematics may be undertaken more than once in a different topic in each instance.
