This is an independent research course culminating in a final written piece of academic work. Remote study is a study option with approval from the course convenor.

Motivations for taking the course can include:

·      gaining necessary independent research skills

·      trying out topics or methods for a potential PhD or industry-focused project

·      demonstrating readiness for entering a PhD program either at ANU or another institution.

·      conducting a pilot study in preparation for a larger industry or academic project.

Students will learn:

·      how to identify a topic of interest,

·      how to formulate a research question,

·      how to scale that research question to fit the scope of an Advanced Masters sized project (roughly thesis equivalent),

·      how to select relevant literature to frame their project,

·      how to devise a research design that will support them in answering their research question,

·      how to select appropriate methods to go about answering their chosen research question,

·      how to conduct research according to their research design,

·      research ethics,

·      analysis of data to develop research findings in relation to the research question,

·      academic writing skills with particular attention to structuring and writing a thesis.

This course will enable students to develop competencies expected of professionals working in business, government, academia or the broader community. There may be internship opportunities available for which students can apply. A holistic selection process will be used to select the best applicant for each opportunity. Students can also propose internships or research projects, but these will always be established following negotiations between the ANU and the potential host organisations or project sponsors, before being offered to students along with other opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. develop a significant research question relating to cybernetics;
  2. investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to the discipline, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
  3. communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.

Work Integrated Learning

Projects

This project course enables you to develop competencies expected of professionals working in business, government academia or the broader community.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Research design assessment (10) [LO 1,2,3]
  2. Written thesis or similar independent research output (90) [LO 1,2,3]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

Combination of individual research and/or attendance at the internship placement, attendance at and participation in assessment activities, and writing the reflective report to a total of 130 hours for each 6 units.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Masters of Applied Cybernetics program and have successfully completed CECS6001 or CYBN6001. Incompatible with CECS8002.

You will need to contact the School of Cybernetics to request a permission code to enrol in this course.
