This course is no longer required for admission to English Honours.
Early Modern to Eighteenth Century Literature studies selected poetry, prose and drama from the late 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The course involves the analysis of literary works and investigation of germane contexts (literary, social and political). Authors to be studied can include canonical figures such as Shakespeare, Milton, Rochester, Behn, Swift, Haywood, Lennox and Sterne, as well as less well-known writers and popular texts that often circulated anonymously or pseudonymously.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- apply knowledge of the historical and cultural contexts of the literature of this period to some major authors, works, and genres;
- identify key elements that are distinctive to the artistic achievement of early modern writers;
- reflect and write analytically about the literary texts and their contexts; and
- develop their own skills of literary critical analysis.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact: 24 hours of seminars and 12 hours of tutorials.
