This is a flexible 6-24 unit course that allows students to undertake a substantial research project on an appropriate engineering topic. Students will be expected to carry out independent research on this topic whilst working under a supervisor who is affiliated with the College of Engineering, Computer & Cybernetics. The nature of the project can be theoretical, experimental, design or development based on the interests of the student and the availability of supervisors.
Students must obtain permission from the Master of Engineering program convenor and secure the support of a supervisor before enrolling in this course.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Identify a substantial engineering-related research and/or complex design project and the knowledge, resources, skills and methodologies required to execute it successfully.
- Create new knowledge and draw sound conclusions through the application of relevant underlying theory, skills, concepts and methodologies in relevant engineering, scientific and/or multi-disciplinary fields.
- Generate, analyse, interpret and document new research results, including a thorough assessment of relevant assumptions and limitations, and compare and contrast to existing work and literature.
- Communicate the project objectives, process, knowledge and results in oral, visual and written forms to colleagues, other engineering professionals and the broader community.
- Apply project management and organisational skills to produce time-sensitive deliverables in a research project.
- Critically reflect on the outcomes and execution of a research project to enable continuous improvement of research skills.
- Work effectively, professionally and ethically as part of a research team led by a project supervisor.
Work Integrated Learning
Projects
In this course, you will undertake a research project. The nature of the project can be theoretical, experimental, design or development based on the interests of the student and the availability of supervisors.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
Workload
Students are expected to engage in their individual project work for no less than 20 hours a week on average (for a 24 units project taken over two semesters).
Please note that the above figures are only indicative. Research work has a degree of unpredictability, and individual time management and research choices can have a significant impact on the time demands of a project. It is common for projects to also involve work during non-teaching periods (mid-semester and/or winter/summer break).
Students should manage and monitor their project workload in consultation with their supervisor.
