Students will be expected to research the scientific literature relevant to a given topic and construct a research proposal in the style of a funding application to a major funding body. The proposal will addresses the background, aims, hypotheses and detailed experimental approach to extend the known information and outline a research project in the defined area of neuroscience. Each student will have a neuroscience academic advisor relevant to their research proposal with whom they will meet regularly. The course will involve self-directed learning and independent research of the literature.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Analyse and critically evaluate scientific literature in the field of study.
  2. Systemically identify relevant theory and concepts in the chosen field and relate these to appropriate methodology and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Integrate diverse methodologies and theories in research planning, including robust experimental design and statistics.
  4. Apply knowledge to design an original research project to address a specific problem in the area of neuroscience.
  5. Present research findings and plans, both orally and written, to an audience with a broad neuroscience background.
  6. Maintain professional relationships with senior colleagues in a research environment.
