Global Public Policy Challenges focuses on understanding and addressing some of the most pressing issues confronting our world, looking to the mega-trends shaping collective future states, and the importance of the past. In this course we will delve into the complexities of issues such as climate change, environmental conflict, human rights, non-traditional security, digital transformation, economic inequality, and beyond. We will explore important global policy challenges, examining them from multiple perspectives, and seek to develop innovative potential solutions through lively discussions, simulations, and collaborative projects. A key aspect of the course will be how to design dynamic institutions that can cope with rapidly changing environments. For those who want to make a difference in the world, this course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex landscape of global public policy and to drive meaningful change.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Develop a nuanced understanding of the range of public policy problems and issues that have global scale, reach and impacts
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of key conceptual frameworks used to understand and interpret global public policy problems
  3. Critically appraise and apply policy analytical approaches and scenario-based policy forecasting methods for evaluating and extrapolating evidence
  4. Analyse global policy problems from multiple perspectives and develop evidence-based policy and/or institutional solutions
  5. Clearly articulate and persuasively convey policy analysis and solutions using written, visual and verbal communication strategies

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

The standard workload for a 6 unit course is 130 hours including class time and independent study.

Preliminary Reading

Beth Simone Noveck (2021) Solving Public Problems: A Practical Guide to Fix Our Government and Change Our World, Yale University Press.

Preliminary readings will also cover key methodologies in foresight and futures thinking. Additional materials will focus on the specific policy challenges.
