This course is designed for students who wish to study chemistry at a level beyond a standard major in Chemistry at years 11 and 12. International students are not able to enrol in this course.
Topics covered in year 11 will include:
• Electronic Structure involving a detailed investigation of s, p, d and f atomic orbitals.
• Valence Shell Electron Shell repulsion Theory (VSEPR). Coordination numbers 2-6
• Molecular Orbital (MO) Theory
• Bond Hybridisation
• Advanced thermochemistry including the entropy and Gibbs Free Energy and the relationship between Gibbs and equilibrium.
• Enzyme (Michaelis Menten) and polymer kinetics
• Molecularity
Topics covered in year 12 will include:
• Advanced organic chemistry including a detailed study of functional groups and their reactivity
• Mechanisms (E1 and E2) for selected organic reactions including the use of arrows to indicate electron movement
• Advanced instrumental methods including NMR, MS, GC and electromagnetic spectroscopy
• Electrosynthesis
• Relationship between the mass of material that is deposited when different currents are applied
This is Part B of a 2 part course.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
