This course offers an advanced approach to ethics or social and political philosophy, suitable for students who have a background in this area and who may be interested in continuing into 4th year Honours. What is taught will change from year to year with the topic for 2024 being 'Ethics of Climate Change'.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. examine and describe accurately the major philosophical issues relating to ethics and justice covered in the course;
  2. state and critically evaluate the most important arguments for and against the main philosophical positions discussed in the course, analysing their core concepts, assumptions, and implications;
  3. develop detailed and well-structured written arguments for conclusions concerning two of the topics covered by the course; and
  4. engage in well-reasoned oral discussion and debate on the topics covered by the course.

Indicative Assessment

  1. 2 x (2,250 word) essays (80) [LO 1,2,3]
  2. Preparation and participation - submission of weekly reading notes (20) [LO 1,2,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 36 hours of weekly seminars (3 hours per week for 12 weeks); and

b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
