This program develops students' proficiency in culturally and socially appropriate communication in Indonesian—the national language of Australia's proximate neighbour and a language spoken by over 200 million individuals. The major places significant emphasis on both cultural and linguistic fluency from introductory levels onward, highlighting the practical and contextual use of the language in everyday situations. By completing this major, students will not only engage in meaningful conversations on topics pertinent to Indonesian speakers but also adeptly read and write the language as it appears in media and literature. Students in this major are encouraged to study Indonesian through immersive programs, which can be done through intensive study in the summer or winter breaks, and in some cases through semester long study programs. Competitive scholarships are available to qualified students.
