This minor considers the psychological processes involved in relations between groups, covering the basic topics in social psychology such as social influences on attitudes and behaviour, attitude change, social cognition, cooperation and conflict. Topics covered include analysis of the social psychology of groups, social identity, stereotyping, cooperation, leadership, power, social influence, collective action, negotiation and communication. Laboratory classes are interactive and include practical and theoretical considerations of issues in social psychology and society.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand, apply, integrate and generate knowledge in social psychology in educational and professional contexts.
  2. Develop and engage in a range of skills and methods to identify, analyse, critique and respond to complex problems relevant to social psychology.
  3. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts in social psychology, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  4. Apply appropriate research methods to evaluate data in social psychology.
  5. Communicate concepts and results in social psychology clearly and effectively.
  6. Work and learn in both independent and collaborative ways with others to encompass diverse abilities and perspectives.
  7. Exercise personal, professional and social responsibility as a global citizen.
