SELT Survey Results

This course introduces students to fundamental skills for working with glass in a contemporary art and design context.

Students will learn methods for shaping glass in response to set projects. The course introduces ways of transforming glass through heating, cutting and constructing, as well as strategies to explore and realise creative works through craft production techniques. Students will learn the contextual underpinnings for glass in contemporary practice through lectures, seminar discussions, and their own research. The course explores possibilities for the medium in broader visual arts and design contexts while offering a foundation for a professional glass practice. Work health and safety (WHS) instruction is integrated throughout the course.

Students may complete this course three for a maximum credit value of 18 units, provided they enrol in a different topic in each instance/semester. Please note that the course content, assessment structure, and reading list will change depending on the topic and the expertise of the lecturer convening the course. Please refer to the class summary for the specific term in which you wish to enrol for a detailed description.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Introduction to Glassblowing

This course introduces students to fundamental skills and contextual knowledge for working with molten glass. Students will learn to manipulate and transform hot glass in response to set projects across glassblowing and cold working. They will also develop knowledge of historical underpinnings for glass in contemporary practices though lectures, seminar discussions, and contextual research. It forms part of the foundation for a specialist glass practice, while supporting non-specialist explorations of the properties and possibilities of the medium in broader visual arts and design contexts. Work health and safety instruction is integrated throughout the syllabus. 

  • Introduction to Glass Kiln Forming

This course introduces students to fundamental skills and contextual knowledge for working with kiln formed glass. Students will learn methods for fusing and shaping glass in response to set projects. The course introduces ways of transforming glass through heating, cutting and constructing, as well as strategies to explore and realise creative works through craft production techniques. Students will learn the contextual underpinnings for glass in contemporary practice through lectures, seminar discussions, and contextual research. It forms part of the foundation for a professional glass practice, while supporting possibilities for the medium in broader visual arts and design contexts. Work health and safety (WHS) instruction is integrated throughout the course.

  • Introduction to Glass Flame Working

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. identify and use basic techniques and principles appropriate to glass;
  2. employ safe and professional studio work processes using the specialised equipment;
  3. explore and evaluate the creative possibilities of materials and techniques in response to set projects; and
  4. develop works that respond to contemporary glass theories and art practices.

Research-Led Teaching

This course is taught with methods and processes that pertain to practice-led research. The course equips students to creatively integrate ideas and making through the exploration of materials and techniques and to identify historical precedents and contextual frameworks.

Field Trips

The course may involve visits to local institutions and glass workshops. Transport, parking and associated fees are the responsibility of the student.

Additional Course Costs

This course will have a Materials Fee of $250. At the ANU School of Art & Design, each workshop sources appropriate specialist materials, which are made available to students to facilitate their working effectively, efficiently and safely within our programs. The School of Art & Design is able to supply materials that don’t compromise ANU obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS), and that have been assessed as suitable for each course. The Materials Fee  is payable for the School of Art & Design to supply consumables and materials that become your physical property. You can choose to pay the Materials Fee and have these materials supplied to you through the School of Art & Design, allowing you to take advantage of the GST-free bulk purchasing power of the ANU. These materials are also WHS compliant. The exact cost of the Materials Fee will be updated in the Class Summary for each semester in which the course is offered. AFTERHOURS ACCESS

Students have the option to obtain additional access to workshop and studio spaces outside of class delivery. Afterhours Access is defined as access to workshop and studio spaces outside of business hours (8am – 6pm) between 6pm - 10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday. It is afforded to students by paying an Afterhours Access Fee each semester.

Examination Material or equipment

At assessment times, students will present their completed works, support materials, and relevant visual diaries in response to set projects. Additional self-directed experimentation is highly encouraged. All materials will be set up ahead of assessment sessions, and presented to staff over the course of scheduled assessment. All assessment requirements will be discussed during class, and teaching staff members are available for any questions related to the assessment process.

Whether you are on campus or studying online, there are a variety of online platforms you will use to participate in your study program. These could include videos for lectures and other instruction, two-way video conferencing for interactive learning, email and other messaging tools for communication, interactive web apps for formative and collaborative activities, print and/or photo/scan for handwritten work and drawings, and home-based assessment.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Skills website. In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Canvas’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Student participation is key in developing skills and knowledge relevant to the material, and essential in acquiring safe working methods. It is assessed in every project, through attendance and active participation in technical classes, self-directed sessions, group discussions, lectures and scheduled Workshop activities. Additionally, all Glass students are required to participate in a weekly clean up scheduled on Friday at 1.00 pm. Alternative times can be arranged with the Technical Officer if you are unavailable. Participation is assessed as part of all tasks.

Foundations

ASSESSMENT BRIEF:

This assessment introduces fundamental technical skills and material understanding for working with hot, kiln, and cold glass processes. Through a sequence of structured studio tasks to understand how glass behaves and develop competency in handling, preparing, and transforming float glass within controlled studio systems. This includes cutting strips, circles, squares, etc, laying out in kilns to fuse and exposing glass to gravity, varying temperature fusing, carving hanging, slumping etc. The emphasis is on developing safe, consistent, and responsive studio practice, alongside the ability to observe and respond to how glass behaves under heat, pressure, and surface intervention. You will build technical fluency through making, testing, and repetition across a series of set exercises.

WHS requirements are embedded throughout all studio activities. You will complete a sequence of structured technical exercises that focus on developing core competencies in glass processes, including kiln-based transformation and coldworking techniques.

Each task is designed to develop:

  • control of material behaviour through heat and handling
  • understanding of kiln processes (fusing, slumping, and related transformations)
  • surface and finishing techniques using coldworking processes
  • awareness of how glass responds to systemised studio conditions


SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

1. TECHNICAL LOG (PROCESS RECORD)

A structured record of your technical learning across all tasks. This should include:

  • brief documentation of each exercise
  • observations of material behaviour (what the glass did and how you responded)
  • key technical learnings or adjustments made during making
  • annotated images or diagrams where relevant

The log should evidence ongoing engagement with studio processes and material behaviour. The log can take the form of either a physical notebook, and/or digital methods of recording. Please note all students, regardless of whether they have chosen physical or digital documentation format, are required to upload a single PDF document to Canvas by 9.00am, Week 6. If you have chosen a physical format you will need to scan or photograph your submission then compress it into a single file.

 

2. TECHNICAL SAMPLE SET

A curated set of outcomes produced through the technical exercises. This should demonstrate:

  • completion of all set tasks
  • control and understanding of float glass processes
  • application of kiln and coldworking techniques
  • progression in technical competency across the course

Samples should be clearly organised and labelled as a coherent body of work. Set-up will be in the arch space in glass on week 6. Set-up between 9.00am and 10.00am. Group review at 10.00am.

 

3. STUDIO COMPETENCY SIGN-OFF

Completion of the studio equipment competency record confirming your ability to:

  • safely operate designated hot, kiln, and cold studio equipment
  • follow WHS procedures and studio protocols
  • work independently within approved technical processes

This must be verified through the studio competency system. The deadline for sign-off is 9.00am Week 6.

Material Transformations

This assessment focuses on the transformation of glass through experimental making processes that extend and apply the technical foundations developed earlier in the course. Students will work with mined and processed glass materials, including recycled and furnace-derived elements, to develop a body of experimental work through kiln-based and coldworking processes.

The emphasis is on working with material behaviour over time, testing how glass responds to heat, fracture, assembly, and reconfiguration. Students are expected to develop an iterative making process that allows outcomes to emerge through interaction with material conditions rather than predetermined results. Students will develop a sustained body of experimental work using mined glass materials and established technical knowledge. This may include:

  • reworking broken or recycled glass components
  • creating pre-formed and recycled glass elements
  • kiln-based transformations
  • layering, fusing, or disrupting flat glass systems
  • coldworking interventions to alter surface or structure

The project should demonstrate an evolving relationship between material testing, technical application, and decision-making through making.

This assessment focuses on:

  • material-led experimentation and iteration
  • transformation of glass through heat, fracture, and reassembly
  • development of personal material systems and processes

Reading & Situating Practice

Reading & Situating Practice asks you to critically examine the material, technical, and conceptual outcomes developed through assessment 2 ‘Material Transformations’. Using your own work as a primary source of inquiry, you will analyse how experimentation, process, and material behaviour informed the development of your work, and situate these findings in relation to contemporary glass theories and art practices. The assessment focuses on developing your ability to evaluate creative possibilities through making, identify knowledge generated through material experimentation, and position your practice within a broader field of contemporary glass practice. Drawing on work produced throughout the semester, develop a visual analysis that examines the relationship between process, material behaviour, technical decision-making, and outcome. Through analysis and contextual investigation, identify how your work connects to, responds to, or diverges from relevant contemporary glass theories and art practices. Your own work should remain central to the submission, with contextual references used to support and extend your analysis.

This assessment focuses on:

  • evaluation of material experimentation and technical processes
  • analysis of material, formal, and conceptual outcomes
  • connections between making, meaning, and context
  • engagement with contemporary glass theories and art practices
  • articulation of an emerging studio position

 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

1. VISUAL ANALYSIS

Submit a visually driven analysis of your Material Transformations project.

The visual analysis should include:

  • images of experimental tests, developmental work, and resolved outcomes
  • annotated observations of material behaviour, process, and transformation
  • visual evidence of experimentation, iteration, and decision-making
  • relevant contextual references, including artists, artworks, exhibitions, texts, theories, or concepts

The analysis should demonstrate how observations arising from making can be connected to broader contemporary glass practices and ideas.

2. PRACTICE POSITION STATEMENT (600–1000 WORDS)

Submit a written statement that positions your work in relation to the material investigations undertaken throughout the semester and relevant contemporary glass practices.

The statement should discuss:

  • key discoveries made through experimentation
  • how material and technical processes informed the development of your work
  • significant themes, concerns, or questions emerging from your practice
  • relevant contemporary theories, practitioners, artworks, or concepts
  • how you would situate your work within a contemporary glass context

The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 is a legal document that the University uses to promote academic integrity, and manage breaches of the academic integrity principle. The Policy and Procedure support the Rule by outlining overarching principles, responsibilities and processes. The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 commences on 1 December 2021 and applies to courses commencing on or after that date, as well as to research conduct occurring on or after that date. Prior to this, the Academic Misconduct Rule 2015 applies.

 

The University commits to assisting all students to understand how to engage in academic work in ways that are consistent with, and actively support academic integrity. All coursework students must complete the online Academic Integrity Module (Epigeum), and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students are required to complete research integrity training. The Academic Integrity website provides information about services available to assist students with their assignments, examinations and other learning activities, as well as understanding and upholding academic integrity.

Online Submission

You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:

  • Late submission not permitted. If submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date is not permitted, a mark of 0 will be awarded.
  • Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Referencing Requirements

The Academic Skills website has information to assist you with your writing and assessments. The website includes information about Academic Integrity including referencing requirements for different disciplines. There is also information on Plagiarism and different ways to use source material. Any use of artificial intelligence must be properly referenced. Failure to properly cite use of Generative AI will be considered a breach of academic integrity.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information.
In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service – including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.

Research Interests


My research is driven by the belief that understanding a material begins with learning its rules before discovering how and when to challenge them. Glass has inherent behaviours, limitations, and possibilities that reveal themselves through careful observation, repetition, and experimentation. By working with these properties rather than against them, the material itself begins to shape the direction of enquiry, suggesting new questions and unexpected outcomes. Rather than treating technique as an end in itself, I see technical knowledge as a foundation for creative exploration, where informed risk-taking allows new forms, surfaces, and meanings to emerge.
