In this intermediate level Chinese language course, students will further develop their linguistic and cultural competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This course uses a Chinese language textbook, authentic audio and visual materials to provide students with an opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture, society, history and language. Throughout the course, students have weekly opportunities to practice in writing and speaking, and to critically think about the differences between Chinese and Western cultures. By the end of this course, students will gain more confidence in interacting with native speakers and understanding of aspects of the Chinese history and cultural practices.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Demonstrate increased oral and written competence, with an active vocabulary of about 1,600 words and expressions;
- Demonstrate an increased ability to undertake tasks in reading, writing, listening and speaking at the level of intermediate proficiency;
- Recognise the range of grammatical structures covered in the course and produce short authentic texts with a general awareness of linguistic and contextaul appropriateness.
- Demonstrate the ability to critically think about a range of topics and exchange ideas with native speakers.
- Develop and demonstrate cultural awareness through conversational and listening practice, as well as in writing at the basic level. .
Other Information
Proficiency level: completion of this course is roughly equivalent to HSK 3.
On successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to engage at an Intermediate level of Standard Modern Chinese.
Students with native speaker proficiency (may include cognate languages and dialects) must review the language proficiency assessment site and contact the CAP Student Centre for appropriate enrollment advice. Students with previous “language experience or exposure” are required to undertake a language proficiency assessment to ensure enrollment at the most appropriate level.
Relevant past experience includes:
- Previous study of the language (both formal and informal, for example but not limited to, at school, or, home, or through online activities, etc.)
- Being exposed to the language in childhood via a family member or friend
- Travel or living in a country where the language is spoken
- The language being spoken in your home (even if you do not speak it yourself)
Students who are not sure if they need to undertake a language proficiency assessment should seek advice from the course or language convenor. Students who intentionally misrepresent their language proficiency level may be investigated under the Academic Integrity Rule 2021 as having failed to comply with assessment directions and having sought unfair advantage. This may results in a penalty such as reduced grades or failure of the course.
Students are not permitted to enroll in a language course below one that they have already successfully completed, except with permission of the language and/or course convenor.

Workload
Five contact hours per week. The total workload for the course is 130 hours including independent study, which includes reviewing the content of the lesson, completing the weekly audio and written tasts, and preparation for the three tests.
Students are expected to attend 2 x 1 hour lectures and 3 x 1 hour tutorials each week.
