As a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) candidate, you will work with increased independence, under the direction of a supervisory panel of experts in the field. Your research will make an original and important contribution to human knowledge, research and development.
An MPhil in Business is an essential pathway for candidates pursuing an academic career in this discipline and further studies in a PhD program. In addition, a well-crafted MPhil can provide a significant stepping stone to other areas of employment such as consulting, public sector, and industry.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain their philosophical approach and its incorporation into a significant autonomous research journey and the building of their research identity;
- Articulate a problem or issue related to a complex social phenomenon within or across the domains of business and management studies that merits targeted study and research skills to advance scholarship and professional practice;
- Identify relevant databases to systematically retrieve applicable and appropriate literature to address research problems and ensuing questions;
- Critically and systematically review and discuss the extant body of complex knowledge within a domain to demonstrate the expertise and skills required for scholarly inquiry;
- Devise an effective research design, including a justification of the methodology(ies) developed, adapted and implemented for the scholarly study of the topic of interest;
- Actively prioritise the conduct of responsible and ethical research within an environment that promotes scholarship and collegiality in the Research School of Management;
- Develop insights into the discipline through expert and specialised analytical, research and technical skills as applied to the research data collected;
- Determine the contributions and implications of the research for the advancement of theoretical knowledge and practice;
- Propose future directions of research in the discipline based on original insights and knowledge gained through a critical discussion of the findings of the research; and
- Produce a manuscript in the form of a monograph or collection of scholarly articles to transmit their knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Indicative Assessment
- RSM research candidates are required to meet a number of progress milestones including:
- an initial Annual Plan,
- completion of Research Integrity Training,
- Annual Plan & Reports,
- completion of at least two mandatory courses and one elective course,
- successful completion of the Thesis Proposal Review (TPR),
- the Pre-Submission Final Oral Presentation of their research, and
- all milestones must be completed satisfactorily and are progression hurdles.
- Thesis of up to 60,000 words.Thesis to be assessed by at least 2 external examiners (100) [LO 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
One unit of enrolment is equivalent to 1 week, full-time and 2 weeks part-time. It is expected that students will enrol in a minimum of 48 units and a maximum of 96 units across the duration of the program.
