This course deepens students’ understanding of music practice, specifically how it is expressed in live contexts. It focuses on developing musicianship and artistry across various live music environments ranging from the professional stage to community-oriented contexts. Students critically engage with the expressive aspects of music practice, gaining experience across a range of genres. They explore a series of topics emphasising acoustic and amplified live music, acquiring practical knowledge of performing for live audiences, including insights into hearing safety and principles of amplified sound from a performer’s viewpoint. Additionally, students develop effective communication strategies for diverse live music contexts, which support professional readiness and adaptability.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate technical proficiency including rhythm, intonation, articulation, timbre, and dynamics (as appropriate) to enhance musical expression in live performance;
  2. create expressive live performances by applying improvisation, music technology, and genre-specific stylistic techniques;
  3. interpret live sound requirements and apply appropriate techniques and terminology through planning and performance preparation;
  4. apply verbal and non-verbal communication and feedback strategies to support collaborative live performance; and
  5. evaluate and apply safe hearing practices in personal and group live music contexts.
