Global Semester is a highly flexible course designed for students to undertake a range of studies at an ANU exchange partner for up to six months and count it towards the completion of ANU majors, minors or electives. Students can nominate to undertake disciplinary studies in English, as well as language studies or disciplinary studies in their target language.
Global Semester is a variable unit course, so it can accommodate a breakdown of disciplinary or language studies to count towards Asia Pacific Studies majors, minors or electives, or it can accommodate partial credit if students are nominating to split their semester exchange program across two degrees.
Students can apply to undertake Global Semester at any ANU exchange partner throughout the world. However, students undertaking a semester of exchange at an ANU exchange partner in Asia may wish to enrol in the Semester in Asia course. As part of the application process, students will be asked to outline how the proposed study at the ANU exchange partner will count towards the majors, minors and/or electives in their ANU degree(s).
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Develop and apply the relevant field/discipline expertise contained in the courses taken at an exchange partner.
- Critically engage with relevant literature and expertise in the field of study, analysing the comparative strength and weakness of rival approaches.
- Communicate persuasively in a variety of written and oral forms.

Indicative Assessment
- Assessment depends on choices of partner institution, but will be comparable to ANU expectations of 6000 words or the equivalent (null) [LO null]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
The workload is expected to be equivalent to an ANU course, where the total workload is 130 hours for a 6-unit course, 260 hours for a 12-unit course and 520 hours for a 24-unit course, including time spent in scheduled classes and independent study.
Inherent Requirements
To complete this course, students must participate in the field trip/study tour to a domestic or international field location. To participate in the trip, students must be able to:
- Travel to the field location and stay in field accommodation such as shared basic cabins or dorm rooms;
- Monitor and manage their own health while studying and living with a small group of people at the location, which may be isolated;
- Understand and respect the needs of other participants and act professionally throughout the trip.
Students who cannot meet these requirements will not be able to participate in the trip and therefore cannot complete the course.
In addition, some of the trip options may require students to:
- Safely traverse 2-3km over uneven ground at a moderate pace.
Students who can provide evidence they are unable to meet this requirement may be able to choose other options or negotiate alternative participation and assessment requirements with the course convenor.
