The world's challenges appear to be increasingly complex. Environmental, social and economic challenges are now recognised to be highly interdependent, with some commentators describing a state of polycrisis: where many crises - such as climate change, economic inequality, biodiversity loss and food security - all occur at once, and also have highly interconnected and compounding effects. Scientific and other forms of knowledge are critical for effectively addressing these challenges, but doing so is likely to require more than the documentation of disasters, the development of technical solutions, and the setting of deadlines. Science communication in the context of planetary crisis demands meaningful dialogue between science and society to develop more just and sustainable futures.

This course explores challenges and opportunities for science communication in the context of planetary crisis. In doing so, it will provide students with knowledge and skills to think critically about the sustainability challenges confronting societies around the world (especially in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals) and helps students to develop a more robust transdisciplinary understanding of science communication in this context.

The course will cover a range of topics, such as understanding the historical context of science communication, planetary crises and environmental expertise, the need to grapple with challenges of complexity and diversity when thinking at global scales, the foundations for recognising and engaging with different knowledge-systems, and the importance and options for dialogical, participatory and inclusive science communication. The course will allow students to develop skills that they can carry forward into further studies and employment, where they may seek to apply science communication concepts and approaches to engage publics, journalists, governments, industry professionals and other scientists in discussions and practices that enable the emergence of desirable futures for both people and the planet.

This course is co-taught with postgraduate students but assessed separately.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Describe key challenges for science communication in the context of planetary crisis
  2. Critically evaluate past and present examples of science communication in the context of planetary crisis
  3. Recognise and apply key academic concepts to inform the analysis of science communication in the context of planetary crisis
  4. Describe and demonstrate practical and/or creative strategies to enhance science communication for planetary crises

Research-Led Teaching

The course content is structured in terms of key themes from research literature in the field of social studies of science and technology, including examples of research conducted by the course convener/lecturer and colleagues. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on, extend and critique research insights, and apply insights to examples of science and technology communication. Finally, students will apply core themes and insights to define a concrete problem or opportunity for science communication and planetary crises, and translate their learning in the form of a report. This will give them experience of the research process.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Skills website. In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Canvas’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

The weekly lectorials include significant in-class assessment and opportunities for feedback, which will be important for the successful completion of the course. Students are therefore expected to attend all of the face-to-face components of the course and class participation is assessed.

Assessment Task 1

Written critical reflections (in class)

Individual written task focused on writing five short critical personal reflections on pieces of written or audio-visual material shared in class. The five efforts will take place in weeks 2-6, and each will take the form of a timed assessment with a duration of 20 minutes involving individual work carried out in class. Only the highest marked three of these five efforts will be recorded. Each effort will be handwritten and completed on a provided pro-forma. No use of computers, mobile phones or any internet connected devices is permitted during the completion of the task. Printed dictionaries may be used. Hard copies of the written assessment item should be submitted by hand to the course tutor at the end of each timed period with a cover sheet and copies will be produced for marking. Late submission not permitted. Marks will be returned by the start of class the following week.


Assessment criteria: Use of evidence from the course readings/lectures/discussions in formulation of answers; The quality of critical analysis; Extent to which questions are answered in full. Marking matrix will be provided on Canvas.

Participatory Process Plan draft

Individual written assignment considering the strengths and weaknesses of design choices for a participatory process. Assignment is a timed assessment with a duration of 1 hour involving individual work carried out in class in week 9. The assignment will be handwritten and completed on a provided pro-forma. No use of computers, mobile phones or any internet connected devices is permitted. Printed dictionaries may be used. Hard copies of the written assessment should be submitted by hand to the course tutor at the end of the timed period with a cover sheet and copies will be produced for marking. Late submission not permitted.

Oral presentation on challenge or opportunity for science communication and planetary crisis

Individual oral presentation on a specific challenge or opportunity for science communication and planetary crisis to be conducted in class during weeks 10 and 11 (depending on numbers). Presentations will be up to 3 minutes long (anything after 3 minutes will not be assessed) and response to one question (capped at 1 minute). Presentations will be recorded for marking purposes. Peer feedback provided. Late submission not permitted.


Assessment criteria: Logic and coherence of proposal; Quality of argument and explanation; Verbal expression and presentation. Marking matrix will be provided on Canvas.

Assessment Task 4

Annotated final Participatory Process Plan

Individual written assignment composed of completing one polished version of the Participatory Process Report setting out the approach and purpose of a participatory process with a given audience to engage them with planetary crisis. This should build on work carried out in Assessment 2 and be completed according to provided template with annotations.


Word length can be up to 750 words for the primary document and 250 words for annotations. Reference list not included in word count. Any submissions that exceed word limits will be subject to a penalty: 5% penalty for any part that exceeds the specified word limit criterion; maximum penalty 10% of the grade for the task; and additional words will not be assessed. Assessment item should be submitted via Canvas/TurnItIn. Late submission permitted.

Individual written assignment on a specific challenge or opportunity for science communication and planetary crisis identified in Assessment Task 3. Reference list not included in word count. Assessment item should be submitted via Canvas/TurnItIn. Late submission permitted.

Class participation

Individual participation in class assessed via written peer feedback on oral presentations (scheduled for weeks 10-11 depending on student enrolment). Students will submit by hand to the convenor one handwritten peer feedback form at the end of class on the allocated presentation day. Students may also be asked to share responses verbally in class, although this will not be assessed. Late submission not permitted.

Academic Integrity

The academic integrity principle commits all students to engage in academic work in ways that are consistent with, and actively support, academic integrity, and to uphold this commitment by behaving honestly, responsibly and ethically, and with respect and fairness, in scholarly practice.

The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 is a legal document that the University uses to promote academic integrity, and manage breaches of the academic integrity principle. The Policy and Procedure support the Rule by outlining overarching principles, responsibilities and processes. The Academic Integrity Rule 2021 commences on 1 December 2021 and applies to courses commencing on or after that date, as well as to research conduct occurring on or after that date. Prior to this, the Academic Misconduct Rule 2015 applies.

 

The University commits to assisting all students to understand how to engage in academic work in ways that are consistent with, and actively support academic integrity. All coursework students must complete the online Academic Integrity Module (Epigeum), and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students are required to complete research integrity training. The Academic Integrity website provides information about services available to assist students with their assignments, examinations and other learning activities, as well as understanding and upholding academic integrity.

Online Submission

You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Canvas Turnitin.

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:

  • Late submission not permitted. If submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date is not permitted, a mark of 0 will be awarded. In cases where students are unable to complete a given assessment task due to specific Extenuating Circumstances consistent with Student assessment (coursework) Policy and appropriate evidence is provided, an alternative assessment may be offered.
  • Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Referencing Requirements

The Academic Skills website has information to assist you with your writing and assessments. The website includes information about Academic Integrity including referencing requirements for different disciplines. There is also information on Plagiarism and different ways to use source material. Any use of artificial intelligence must be properly referenced. Failure to properly cite use of Generative AI will be considered a breach of academic integrity.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information.
In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service – including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy.
If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.

Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
