The course is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge to take a considered position on family law issues. The course covers the following areas of family law:
- marriage;
- violence and abuse in families;
- decision-making about parenting after separation;
- economic aspects of marriage; and
- de-facto relationship breakdown.
To develop their knowledge and skills, students will participate in interactive lectures, class discussions and hypothetical problem-solving activities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Develop and apply specialist knowledge of family law through evaluation of case law, legislation and scholarly writings.
- Critically analyse and synthesise family law materials to develop cohesive arguments addressing complex family law problems.
- Critically reflect on theoretical, policy and practical issues in family law and propose reforms.
- Undertake family law research and present findings using a variety of materials and sources.
- Critically evaluate family law with respect to a range of differing perspectives.
- Reflect upon your learning in the course, your own values, the values underlying the family law system, and the differences between family law and practice in other legal areas.

Workload
Classes offered in non-standard sessions will be taught semi-intensively with compulsory contact hours of approximately 26 hours of face to face teaching. The course will also require advanced preparation through assigned readings. In total, it is anticipated that the hours required for completion of this course (class preparation, teaching and completion of assessment) will not exceed 120 hours.
Classes offered during semester periods are expected to have three contact hours per week. Students are generally expected to devote at least 10 hours overall per week to this course.
