This course requires students to complete a 24-unit master's thesis in the field of Management and its sub-disciplines. The course is available to excellent students enrolled in 2-year duration Master's programs within the Research School of Management who wish to be eligible to progress to future PhD studies. Students will undertake independent research under the guidance of a supervisor. At the completion of this thesis course, students will have developed the capacity to perform high-level independent research and have an in-depth knowledge of their chosen research topic.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Problematise within a relevant discipline through both theoretical and empirical critical analysis.
  2. Translate the problem into a set of clearly defined research questions to enable a scientific approach.
  3. Determine the appropriate research design and methodology to acquire evidence relevant to the research questions.
  4. Acquire a body of evidence relevant to the problem by using the appropriate research methods.
  5. Critically analyse the gathered evidence using appropriate methods of analysis.
  6. Synthesise results and/or findings to inform appropriate solutions related to the problem.
  7. Consider the theoretical and practical implications of the chosen solutions for both the literature and society, and
  8. Produce a structured written thesis which shows the position of the candidate in relation to the underlying problem.

Important Planning Advice

To enrol in this course, you must:

  1. be enrolled in a 2-year (96 unit) Master's program offered by the Research School Management (RSM),
  2. have completed MGMT7250 - Evidence -Based Management and at least 48 units of study,
  3. have a GPA of a minimum of 6.0 from the first 48 units of study,
  4. have approval from an RSM academic to supervise the research thesis,
  5. and have permission from your relevant Program Convenor to undertake thesis studies.


Interested students are advised to start their initial discussion with prospective research project supervisors well before the expected start of their thesis studies

For students in other RSM programs with less than 24u of elective space, you may instead consider MGMT8401- Applied Topics in Business Studies.

Indicative Assessment

  1. The thesis will be completed in stages (e.g. proposal, literature review, thesis, and oral presentation) that may be marked separately or as a single final thesis (to be confirmed with your supervisor and course convener). Workload

130 hours of total student learning time per 6 units of study, comprising of independent student research, consultations with an ANU supervisor, reading, writing and presentations.

Agreement from a supervisor to supervise the research project and resulting thesis.
