The Advanced Italian Studies Minor is for students who already have a high level of competence in Italian. It aims to deepen students' knowledge and critical understanding of Italian language and culture, whilst continuing to improve their fluency in the language, in reading and listening comprehension as well as oral and written expression. The courses included in this Minor allow students to develop language and critiquing skills in fields such as Italian sociolinguistics, cinema, music, gender studies, postcolonial, migration and women's literature. The development of in-depth cross cultural awareness is thus synchronized with the acquisition of sophisticated language competence which will allow students to study at / postgraduate level in Italian universities.

Learning Outcomes

  1. communicate proficiently and confidently in Italian;
  2. identify the structure and uses of Italian;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, historical and linguistics aspects of Italian language and societies and their socio-historical context;
  4. recognise the importance of intercultural communication.

All Language Studies (LANG) courses must have a Course Topic of Italian to be included in this minor.

Minor requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:


6 - 24 units from the completion of the following:

ITAL3015 - Advanced Italian Topics in Language, Culture and Society (6 units)*

ITAL3016 - Advanced Italian Topics in Language and Cultural Studies (6 units)*


A maximum of 18 units from the completion of the following list:

ITAL3505 - Italian Studies Intermediate 1

ITAL3506 - Italian Studies Intermediate 2

LANG3001 - Translation across Languages: the translation of literary texts (6 units)

LANG3002 - Translation across Languages: specialised material (6 units)

ITAL3021 - Global Rome: Culture and Identity in the Italian Capital (6 units)


*These upper-level courses may each be taken multiple times, as they are offered with different topics in different semesters.
