High economic growth in most of Asia during recent decades has seen the emergence of large corporate enterprises which are organised in ways different from companies based in Western countries. Using the business system concept, this course discusses the evolution of conglomerate enterprises, business groups and business networks across key economies in Asia. It introduces students to the particulars of corporate organisation and management of these enterprises and elaborates how these particulars took shape in the economic, social and institutional contexts of the business systems in from which companies originated. The course also explains the internationalisation of companies in Asia and their involvement in the creation of regional supply chains.
