In this course, students undertake an individual engineering research or design project under supervision.

Students are encouraged to put forward their own ideas for the individual project, or they may select a project from a range of projects offered by researchers across the ANU. The topic area would normally be expected to be in the same area as the major (or one of the majors) being completed by the student.

It is recommended that students identify a project topic and supervisor well before project commencement.

Students are expected to manage all aspects of their individual project, from scoping through planning, execution and progress monitoring of the project, to ultimate achievement of the assessment deliverables. Details of the project process, roles and responsibilities are provided on the course Wattle site.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Identify a substantial research and/or complex design project including the problem the project seeks to address, its context and significance in contemporary engineering, scientific or research fields.
  2. Scope the selected project appropriately and identify and determine knowledge, skills and methodologies required to complete the project.
  3. Apply research skills and methodologies to identify, collate, summarise and critically evaluate relevant literature, data and sources.
  4. Combine and demonstrate synthesis of new knowledge with the application of relevant underlying theory, skills, concepts and methodologies in relevant engineering and/or scientific fields.
  5. Analyse, interpret, explain and evaluate results generated during the project and compare and contrast to existing work and literature where appropriate.
  6. Communicate the project objectives, process, knowledge and results to practising engineers and scientists in written and verbal form.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Students are expected to engage in their individual project work for no less than 10 hours a week on average, for an overall 250-300 hours over two semesters. Non-“individual” course activities (i.e., attending classes and participating in peer-support tasks) should account for approximately 10% of a student’s overall engagement with the course. 

Please note that the above figures are only indicative. Research work has a degree of unpredictability, and individual time management and research choices can have a significant impact on the time demands of a project. It is common for projects to also involve work during non-teaching periods (mid-semester and/or winter/summer break). 

Students should manage and monitor their project workload in consultation with their supervisor.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course, you must • have a current minimum average mark (simple average of actual mark of all ANU courses completed at the time of enrolling in ENGN4350) of 70%; AND • at the commencement of the project, have completed ENGN3300 and at least a further 18 units of ENGN3000/4000 courses. We recommend all students to do ENGN4300 as it is the industry-relevant option, while ENGN4350 is the research-impact option. All ENGN4350 students must be engaged in a suitable project under the supervision of a competent supervisor. This requisite is evaluated through a project registration early in the commencement semester. Students who are unable to register a viable project may be unable to enrol in the course or may be excluded from the course. It is therefore strongly encouraged that students seek out a project and supervisor well ahead of their proposed commencement semester, to avoid disappointment.
