This course investigates intersections between young people and sex across diverse disciplines and contexts. The course draws on gender studies, sociology, cultural studies and public health. It examines socio-biological understandings of young people and sexual development. It also explores education about sexuality, reproduction and consent. Technologies of sex are also explored in relation to sexting, robot babies and sexual negotiation online. The content interrogates key concepts in youth studies and sex including reproduction, development, agency and risk. The course also explores methodological and ethical issues in the study of young people and sex.

  2. analyse and apply interdisciplinary understandings of young people, sex and development;
  3. write cogently and critically about how young people and sex are mediated across diverse platforms and contexts;
  4. compare major theoretical debates about young people and sex; and
  5. critically analyse methodological and ethical issues associated with research related to young people and sex.

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 34 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 10 hours of lectures; and 24 hours of tutorials; and
b) 96 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 12 units of Sociology (SOCY) or Gender (GEND) courses, or with permission of the convenor.
