This course will provide key training for thesis writing and research communication in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Students will gain hands-on experience in essential components of the research writing process: planning a study and developing research questions; critically assessing and synthesising relevant literature; effectively structuring a thesis and organising content within sections; and using appropriate academic style and conventions. Students will also gain knowledge of research dissemination through presentations and publications for different audiences, and acquire practical skills in tools and techniques for research writing, such as advanced Word skills and the use of reference management software. By focusing on one topic area for the different pieces of assessment throughout the course, students will complete the course with a strong basis from which to build on for their thesis, and will have had experience presenting their ideas to scholars outside their research area. Material submitted in this course may be incorporated into a student’s thesis.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- critically assess and synthesise scholarship in their eld and engage with disciplinary debates in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics;
- communicate research plans, motivations and findings for linguistics projects to academic, professional and general audiences;
- structure a written piece of research to develop an argument in a coherent way and communicate using appropriate academic and disciplinary conventions; and
- use appropriate tools to enhance their research and the presentation of their research.
