This course is a practical introduction to the Spanish language. Based on a communicative and culture-based approach, this course is designed to develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Spanish language at an A1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The student acquires the language largely through simulated real-life situations in the classroom as well as through grammar modules. Throughout the semester, cultural aspects of the Hispanic world are introduced through the language classes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. acquire language skills, including vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to express preferences and describe present actions, people, and daily routines;
  2. engage in short, predictable conversations in Spanish;
  3. understand and produce very basic written Spanish texts, including for multimedia; and
  4. demonstrate general expertise in critical thinking and reflective learning through an awareness, identification, and appreciation of differences between their own language/culture and the target language and its pluricentric, diverse cultures
