The course provides training opportunities for students in Archaeological Science either as research training in laboratories, or as applied vocational placements. The minimum internship period is normally equivalent to 20-30 days of placement, but this may be completed flexibly or part-time. Course aims and outcomes are individually tailored to the student's training need and goals. This commonly provides the key training skills platform on which independent research projects or thesis topics can be subsequently developed. The course may be undertaken on campus, off campus in Australia, or overseas. In all cases the course is designed by the student in consultation with an academic adviser, and is subject to approval.

Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the travel to a high risk destination form and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate. Disclaimer: Applicants are advised that due to circumstances beyond the University's control (for example, specific international security concerns and international health crises) it may not be possible for students to commence or complete this course as advertised.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. implement core skills and aspects in laboratory practice acquired during laboratory or field training;
  2. understand and implement specific scientific knowledge and approaches within professional archaeological working environments;
  3. integrate learned techniques in archaeological science into contemporary contextualised archaeological frameworks and translate the methods, results and outcomes into a format understandable in industrial and public contexts through a piece of writing; and
  4. understand and independently implement the scientific techniques learned during the internship period.

Work Integrated Learning

Placements

The internship program places a student within a professional workplace setting. The course provides students with a learning experience that is not available within the University. The course shows them how their archaeological skills can be practically used and and provides them with job-ready work experience.

Other Information

This course replaces the variable unit course ARCH8036.

Indicative Assessment

  1. A detailed diary/log outlining the daily activities undertaken by the internee (2500 words) (40) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  2. Essay or report pertaining to the research and training undertaken by the student. This can include imagery archives, professional draft reports, laboratory analytical results and project reports, (5000 words) (60) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from a combination of workshops, attendance at internship placement and applied research and writing. The structure and delivery of contact  hours is dependent on internship type.
