An Australia first, an Indigenous course that focuses on archaeology and Indigenous community engagement. This course involves spending 5 days at the ANU Kioloa campus learning about Indigenous cultural heritage management and archaeology. The course is convened by Australian Indigenous archaeologist, Dave Johnston and includes critical learning with Uncle Owen Carriage a Yuin / Walbunja Senior Elder and Cultural Mentor, and engagement with other senior South Coast Elders. It involves learning oral histories and developing an understanding of Indigenous perspectives. The course is also designed to build understanding in Indigenous community protocols and educate students in ethical approaches to practicing archaeology in Australia. As part of the course students will need to complete a cultural site assessment that includes archaeological and Indigenous cultural values mapping and demonstrate an ability to consult and communicate with local elders and community.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of Indigenous community protocols and the ethical considerations in practicing archaeology in Australia;
  2. understand complex indigenous perspectives, cultural values and record oral histories;
  3. complete a cultural site assessment including archaeological and Indigenous cultural values mapping; and
  4. demonstrate an ability to consult and communicate with Indigenous people on the south coast.

Work Integrated Learning

Fieldwork

This course is an intensive completed entirely on-country with indigenous community elders on the south coast. Students will complete an archaeological site assessment/cultural heritage management plan, cultural values mapping exercises and engage in real-world stakeholder engagement

Other Information

Some of the trip options may require students to safely traverse 2-3km over uneven ground at a moderate pace, and stay in basic cabins and dorms rooms.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hrs of total student learning time made up from:

a. 48 hrs fieldwork at Kioloa

b. 82 hrs of independent student research, reading and writing. Entire course will be completed as a three week intensive.

Inherent Requirements

To complete this course, students must participate in a field trip to an overseas and/or isolated location. In order to participate in the trip, students must have the ability to:

  • Undertake autonomous travel internationally;
  • Monitor and manage their own health within the associated climatic and environmental conditions while studying and living with a small group of people in an international and/or isolated field location; and
  • Engage with local people, customs and practices.


Students who cannot meet these requirements will not be able to participate in the trip and therefore cannot complete the course.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course, students must be have completed at least 24 units towards in the Master of Archaeological and Evolutionary Science, or have permission from the convener.

You will need to contact the School of Archaeology and Anthropology to request a permission code to enrol in this course.
