COMP4550 (12+12) is an Annual course that must be completed twice, in consecutive semesters.

Students will conduct an individual research project under the close supervision of one or more academic staff. Projects will, at least in part, require the application of theoretical or experimental research techniques. In particular, students will be expected to conduct and present a survey of the literature relevant to the research topic.

Students will prepare a thesis reporting on the research project and its outcomes. They will also be expected to present a poster or a short seminar describing their work.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Identify a question/problem in a particular field of computing and devise a plan for a research project to investigate the topic.
  2. Apply effective literature search and critical evaluation skills to complete a literature survey in the project topic area.
  3. Select and apply appropriate research methods, tools, techniques to develop research findings and insights.
  4. Effectively communicate research questions, methods and outcomes in oral, written and graphical forms to a broad audience using appropriate tools.
  5. Produce a structured written thesis demonstrating an understanding of the chosen research area.

Work Integrated Learning

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
