This course is designed for students majoring in Screen Studies. It comprises a supervised problem-based research project that will demonstrate integration of learning across the major. It will focus on intensive study of one or more topics in Screen Studies through a combination of application of theoretical frameworks and practical issues concerning  cinema, television, social media and streaming platforms. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. identify and select from a range of conceptual approaches to understand the interplay between cultural, gendered, linguistic and national identities in the context of globalisation;
  2. evaluate and critically analyse theoretical frameworks and debates concerning the discipline of Screen Studies;
  3. apply screen studies methodologies in order to analyse transmedia and multi-modal story telling platforms; and
  4. communicate an understanding of research methods in written, visual, and oral forms.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Project proposal, 800 words (30%) Learning Outcomes 1-4 (30) [LO null]
  2. Reflexive Learning Journal, 1000 words (20%) Learning Outcomes 1-4 (20) [LO null]
  3. Research project (this can be either a written, visual or multi-modal project), 3000 words or up to 20 minutes if a video (50%) Learning Outcomes 1-4 (50) [LO null]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time consisting of:
a) 24 hours of  supervised project work over 12 weeks; and
b)106 hours of independent student research and project work.
