This minor will provide an understanding of behavioural systems, neuroscience, and brain mechanisms underlying behaviour. This minor includes an historical review of different theoretical and practical approaches to perception and thinking, biological substrates of such processes, and understanding of neuroscience and neuropsychology and philosophical aspects of human cognition. Laboratory classes will highlight specific processing strategies by the brain and visual system, and demonstrate various psychophysical techniques, microscopic and macroscopic anatomy of the nervous system, investigations of higher order processing, experimental approaches to brain and behaviour, and problem-based learning.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand, apply, integrate and generate knowledge in cognition and neuroscience in educational and professional contexts;
  2. Develop and engage in a range of skills and methods to identify, analyse, critique and respond to complex problems relevant to cognition and neuroscience;
  3. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts in cognition and neuroscience, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions;
  4. Apply appropriate research methods to evaluate data in cognition and neuroscience;
  5. Communicate concepts and results in cognition and neuroscience clearly and effectively;
  6. Work and learn in both independent and collaborative ways with others to encompass diverse abilities and perspectives;
  7. Exercise personal, professional and social responsibility as a global citizen.
